A WOMAN’S CHRISTMAS NIGHTMARE

Jose Roys Accused of Rape, Robbery, Assault, Other Crimes

(Bronx, NY – February 5, 2015) – Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson announces the arraignment on an indictment today of 37-year-old JOSE ROYS, accused in the Christmas 2014 rape of a woman who was waiting just before sunrise near a bus stop on Boston Road at Pelham Parkway.

ROYS is accused of approaching the woman, threatening her with harm if she screamed, and then dragging her off into a secluded area where he hit her and demanded she disrobe before he sexually assaulted her.  After summoning help, the woman was treated for injuries at a local hospital.

On New Year’s Eve, a Grand Jury in the Bronx voted the following charges:

Rape in the 1st Degree (B Felony)

Criminal Sexual Act in the 1st Degree (B Felony)

Sexual Abuse in the 1st Degree (E Felony)

Robbery in the 2nd Degree (C Felony)

Robbery in the 3rd Degree (D Felony)

Assault in the 2nd Degree (D Felony)

Grand Larceny in the 4th Degree (E Felony)

In addition to the rape and other sex crimes, ROYS is accused of grabbing his victim’s purse, further threatening harm if she called police.

After the NYPD circulated surveillance video of the suspect at the scene, JOSE ROYS turned himself in to police Christmas night, bringing the purse and its contents to the precinct with him.

JOSE ROYS pled not guilty to the charges before Supreme Court Justice George Villegas, and is being held without bail.  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Gabrielle Martin of the Child Abuse/Sex Crimes Bureau, and has been adjourned until May 12, 2015, in Part 79 before Justice Margaret Clancy.

If convicted of the charges, ROYS faces up to 25 years behind bars, with a maximum of 20 years post-release supervision.

The charges in this indictment are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
