911, I’VE KILLED MY GIRLFRIEND

Stephen Bolt’s Pay Phone Calls Lead to Arrest, Conviction

(Bronx, NY – February 9, 2014) – Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson announces the sentencing of 38-year-old STEPHEN BOLT to 22 years to life behind bars in the January, 2012 murder of his live-in girlfriend, 47-year-old DAWN MONACO. After the killing, Bolt admitted to the crime in several calls to 911 from pay phones in lower Manhattan, leading police to discover the woman’s body.

BOLT claimed he was acting under an extreme emotional disturbance and was intoxicated at the time of the killing.  Nevertheless, he was found guilty of Murder in the 2nd Degree on January 23rd after a non-jury trial before Supreme Court Justice Denis Boyle.

In court, DAWN MONACO’s brother spoke for his entire family – “I cannot describe in words the pain and suffering my family has endured since Dawn was murdered.

“I lost my best friend and confidante forever, all because Stephen Bolt decided to hold true on a threat and murder my sister.

“If Stephen Bolt is ever let back into mainstream society, he will find another victim to emotionally and physically abuse, ultimately murdering again.”

The violent killing occurred following the couple’s fight inside their apartment at 1690 E. 174th Street, on or about January 4th.  BOLT repeatedly stabbed the mother of three children in the neck with a kitchen knife and watched her die.  He admitted to detectives that he stayed with her dead body until three days later, leaving a note next to her corpse admitting his deed — “I always said I would kill you.”

In the days that followed, STEPHEN BOLT made more than a half dozen calls to 911 from lower Manhattan pay phones.  By Monday, police had gleaned enough information to go to the apartment, where they found Monaco’s decomposing body.  When BOLT made another call on Tuesday, January 10th, again from lower Manhattan, police were able to apprehend him.

The case against STEPHEN BOLT was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Raymond Valerio of the Bronx D.A. Domestic Violence Bureau.
