Bronx, NY, February 23, 2015 – Students at Felisa Rincon de Gautier Institute for Law and Public Policy, Banana Kelly High School and Holcombe L. Rucker School of Community Research today participated in a Nat Geo Mundo Explorer Contest event sponsored by Optimum Community and Nat Geo Mundo. Also participating in the event was New York State Assemblyman Marcos Crespo.

Following opening remarks from Felisa Rincon de Gautier Institute for Law and Public Policy principal Grismaldy Laboy-Wilson and Banana Kelly High School assistant principal Marcellus Stovall, Optimum Community emcee Devale Ellis discussed the details of the essay contest and program. Assemblyman Crespo spoke to students about the benefits of world travel with regard to learning and enrichment. The students also viewed two videos relating to the program.

“I cannot imagine a more fulfilling and interesting educational experience than being selected to participate in the 2015 National Geographic Student Expedition,” said Assemblyman Crespo. “World travel, besides being fun, broadens one’s perspective and knowledge tremendously, so I urge all of you to enter this contest. I also thank Optimum Community and Nat Geo Mundo for providing this opportunity to our young people.”

Cablevision Vice President of Public Affairs Jennifer Ostrager noted, “Cablevision is pleased to partner once again with Nat Geo Mundo in bringing this exciting opportunity for educational travel abroad to high school students. Hearing different languages, tasting foreign foods, experiencing different cultures, visiting actual historical sites can be a memorable experience for a young person and make history come alive.”

Sponsored by Optimum Community and Nat Geo Mundo, the Nat Geo Mundo Explorer Contest invites high school students from select schools in the Bronx and Newark, NJ, to apply for a full-scholarship summer travel experience with an emphasis on learning and enrichment. Nat Geo will select one student to participate in the 2015 National Geographic Student Expedition, with program tuition and air travel paid. All trips are led by qualified trip leaders and a National Geographic expert and are provided by National Geographic Student Expeditions. Applicants are required to complete a student travel award application, including personal references and a 300-word essay on what he/she “hopes to accomplish through world travel and why they should be selected.” Submission deadline is March 13, 2015.

Bronx schools included in the 2015 Nat Geo Mundo Explorer Contest are Felisa Rincon de Gautier Institute for Law and Public Policy, Bronx Arena High School, Banana Kelly High School, and Holcombe L. Rucker School of Community Research.
