The Department of Consumer Affairs offers two ways for New Yorkers to file their taxes safely and for free:
Online: Annual income of $60,000 or less. Go to nyc.gov/taxprep. The online service is easy and secure. Use a secure computer to protect your privacy.
In Person: Annual incomes of $53,000 or less (with children) or of $18,000 or less (no children). Visit a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site in your neighborhood. VITA site preparers are IRS-trained and certified to help you file your taxes and claim credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and NYC Child Care Tax Credit, which may be worth up to $10,000. Trained staff at all these sites protect your documents and use a secure website to share them for tax preparation. Please call each location first to set up an appointment.
