Congressman Serrano Given the Inaugural Elizabeth Taylor Legislative Leadership Award

SerranoWashington, DC – U.S. Congressman José E. Serrano was presented with the first Elizabeth Taylor Legislative Leadership Award for his work in support of needle exchange programs by five of Ms. Taylor’s grandchildren at AIDSWatch 2015.

In honor of Elizabeth Taylor’s advocacy work, and to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of her involvement with this cause, the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation is serving as the main sponsor of AIDSWatch this year and presenter of the first Elizabeth Taylor Legislative Award. AIDSWatch is the nation’s largest annual HIV/AIDS advocacy event.

Congressman Serrano, representing the Bronx, was honored as a decades long champion for ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic and who played a pivotal role in removing the bans on use of local Washington D.C. and federal funds to support syringe exchange. Activists lament that the federal ban was reinstated after two years. They continue to count Congressman Serrano as a key ally among legislators working to end the HIV epidemic. Syringe Exchange is one of the six key policy priorities being promoted by advocates during AIDSWatch.

AIDSWatch is the nation’s largest annual constituent-based national HIV/AIDS advocacy event, bringing together hundreds of people living with HIV and their allies to meet with Members of Congress and learn about the important issues at stake for people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States. AIDSWatch 2015 will take place April 13th and 14th in Washington D.C.
