De Blasio Budget Nixes Viverito Bail Fund

From Capital’s Gloria Pazmino: Mayor de Blasio did not provide money to create the city’s first bail fund or to hire 1,000 additional police officers, as requested by the Council. Both proposals are key parts of Mark-Viverito’s approach to criminal justice reform which calls for the reclassification of certain low-level, non-violent offenses, using more “community policing” by adding beat cops and creating a fund for low-income New Yorkers who cannot afford bail and are forced to endure long stays in the city’s jail system. … The mayor also left out of his budget another key Council proposal to fund free in-classroom breakfast for city school children and a request to create a year-round youth employment program.
