The reigning Miss USA beauty queen, Nia Sanchez, visited the Monroe College Bronx campus on Tuesday, May 26 and spread important messages about self-confidence and empowerment.  A fourth-degree black-belt in Taekwondo, she also gave a demonstration in self-defense.  In return, the Monroe students presented her with a basket of Monroe Mustangs souvenirs.

Ms. Sanchez took questions from the students who were particularly interested in her sense of competitiveness in the beauty pageants, success in the face of difficulties in her early life, and goals for the future.

The event was co-sponsored by the college’s Student Activities and School of Criminal Justice.  Before Miss USA took the podium, Dean Michele Rodney explained that as a prime example of Monroe’s practitioner-based faculty, Monroe criminal justice professor Ruben de la Concha is part of the security team for Miss USA and Miss Universe and the Dean credited him with bringing her to the college.

After her presentation, the affable Miss USA met with students individually, taking ‘selfies’ with many of them.
