THU, JUNE4    LANDSCAPE PAINTING WORKSHOP BEGINS

Join artist Rachael Wren and explore how to mix colors, make composition choices and use your paint brush in new ways. Add in a walk through the exhibition in Glyndor Gallery and see how the 12 artists in the show use palette to express their awareness of nature at its most fierce. How does climate change alter your perspective of the landscape?Sessions include demonstrations, individual guidance and gentle critiques. All levels welcome. SAT, JUNE 6    FAMILY ART PROJECT: WEATHER AND WASHES OUTDOORS Family Art Project Go Outdoors with Van Gogh

Take your artistic spirit outdoors and notice the subtle and forceful changes occurring in nature. With visiting artist Angela Dufresne, currently exhibiting in Wrath–Force of Nature, this summer’s exhibition in Glyndor Gallery, capture what you see by combining mists of watercolor with stains, splashes and drips to make an atmospheric vision. Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon. A Wrath–Force of Nature event.

SAT, JUNE 6    TAI CHI CHUAN
Quiet like a mountain, moving like a river, Tai Chi is a sequence of gentle movements based on images found in nature. In this beginner-level class, Irving Yee, a member of the William CC Chen Tai Chi School, introduces students to the internal martial arts and promotes an awareness of its benefits. Session fee: $25/$15 Wave Hill Member. Advance registration online receives a $2 discount. Online registration closes at 8AM on the day of the session. Cancellations must be made by 3PM the Friday before; after that, refunds will not be made. Drop-ins will be accommodated as the limited space permits. SAT, JUNE 6    GARDEN WOODWORKING: BUILD A GARDEN TUTEUR Woodworking Tuteur Workshop
Trellises perform double-duty by supporting rambling vines and serving as ornamental garden features. With master carpenter and Wave Hill Director of Facilities Frank Perrone as your guide, construct your own decorative “tuteur” (pyramidal trellis) to tame your rambunctious vines. No previous carpentry skills required. Space is limited. $60/$50 Member. Registration required, online at wavehill.org or at the Perkins Visitor Center.

This summer, come out and enjoy a restorative session of yoga! Once a season, Wave Hill will offer a free drop-in wellness session for the Bronx and neighboring communities led by Yoga for Bliss founder and director Neem Dewji and other qualified instructors. All levels welcome. Limited number of mats available, so please bring your own. Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon.

SUN, JUNE 7    SUMMER EXHIBITIONS OPENING RECEPTION

Please join us to meet the artists featured in Wave Hill’s summer exhibitions. Seven Deadly Sins: Wrath–Force of Nature explores contemporary anxieties about the environment through painterly and sculptural depictions of natural disasters and their aftermath. This show gathers together a group of artists dedicated to picturing the unpredictability of the material world: Diane Burko, Brian Adam Douglas, Angela Dufresne, Julie Heffernan, Amer Kobaslija, Kent Monkman, Tameka Norris, Brian Novatny, David Opdyke, Anne Peabody, Jon Rappleye and Alexis Rockman. In the Sunroom Project Space, two exhibitions will open. Tamara Johnson is a deft sculptor who insinuates humor into the world of the everyday. At Wave Hill, she extends the iconic balustrade of the pergola on the Great Lawn into the Sun Porch. In the Sun Room, Eto Otitigbe draws on his background in polymedia to encourage viewers to see the landscape as an interactive experience. Free with admission to the grounds.

From personal albums to commercially published monographs, books provide an ideal way to organize and present a related group of photographs. Join photographer Benjamin Swett in this two-day intensive course and learn skills for creating and editing your own book. All skill levels welcome. $175/$135 Wave Hill Member. Learn how to adapt traditional yoga poses while sitting or standing with the support of a chair. Outdoor classes combine stretching, strengthening and breathing techniques designed to relieve stress, calm the mind and increase mobility. Led by a member from the Yoga for Bliss team, chair yoga is suitable for all ages, fitness levels and physical conditions. $25/$15 Wave Hill Member. Program fee includes admission. Join the Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions. In the main gallery, Seven Deadly Sins: Wrath–Force of Nature explores contemporary anxieties about the environment through painterly and sculptural depictions of natural disasters and their aftermath. The Sunroom Project Space hosts two site-specific installations that integrate the outdoors into the architecture of Glyndor House. Tamara Johnson extends the balustrade of the pergola into the Sun Porch, while Eto Otitigbe’s installation in the Sunroom gives sculptural form to his experience of Wave Hill’s grounds. Tours take place Tuesdays and Saturdays at 2PM. Free with admission to the grounds.

A 28-acre public garden and cultural center overlooking the Hudson River  and Palisades, Wave Hill’s mission is to celebrate the artistry and legacy of its gardens and landscape, to preserve its magnificent views, and to explore human connections to the natural world through programs in horticulture, education and the arts.

 

HOURS  Open all year, Tuesday through Sunday and many major holidays: 9AM5:30PM. Closes 4:30PM, November 1–March 14.

ADMISSION  $8 adults, $4 students and seniors 65+, $2 children 6–18. Free Saturday and Tuesday mornings until noon. Free to Wave Hill Members and children under 6.
