STATEMENT FROM BOROUGH PRESIDENT DIAZ RE: South Carolina’s Confederate Flag

confederate battle flag“The Confederate flag represents a period of time where the American people were shattered and violently divided over how humans should be treated based on the color of their skin, representing a culture that promotes division and discrimination.

“I am happy to see the Republican leadership in the state of South Carolina coming around on this issue in light of last week’s tragic act of hatred and violence, joining the national chorus united against this long-standing symbol of hate, and calling for the removal of the Confederate flag from their statehouse,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

A petition on MoveOn.org to remove the Confederate flag from the Mississippi state flag had more than 7,000 signatures by Tuesday morning. Mississippi is the only state from the Old Confederacy that still uses the rebel symbol as part of its official emblem. In 2001, 66 percent of Mississippi voters chose to keep the existing state flag, which was adopted in 1894.

There are 7 states with Confederate symbols on their flag.
