On Sunday July 12th The Albanian American Open Hand Association with over 20 volunteers packed more than 120 boxes of clothes donated to their emergency relief clothing program. The program, one of many by the organization, will provide clothing to the needy during extreme weather events and emergencies, such as a blizzard or hurricane.
The volunteers, in ages ranging from 14-60+, cooperated in organizing, folding, and packing the clothing graciously donated by the Bronx community at large. They were offered Bureks and other treats by local businesses and organizations as a thanks for their hard work.
The Albanian American Open Hand Association, founded by Aleksander Nilaj, has been a growing force for good in the Bronx, and has coordinated many helpful drives and events since its inception, including food and clothing drives. Aleksander noted that aside from the collection of items, the organization of items is just as important, and aids further in effective distribution.
“On behalf of the Albanian America Open Hand Association, we would like to thank all of the volunteers and sponsors for helping get this job done into the hours of the night for the good of our Bronxites in need. God bless all of you,” said Aleksander.
The companies and organizations who donated time, money and resources to make the event possible include: Dukagjini Burek (at 758 Lydig Ave.), who offered an assortment of the scrumptious Albanian pastries for volunteers to enjoy, as well as The Pelham Parkway Neighborhood Association, Jeffrey Panish, The Jewish Community Council and David Alestine, who graciously offered treats, sodas, juices and other refreshments.
