Carey Gabey, A Cuomo Administration Lawyer Shot In Brooklyn Overnight

The New York Daily News reported that Carey Gabey, 43, a lawyer who works for Gov. Cuomo was critically wounded when a gunman began “spraying” into a crowd of revelers on a Brooklyn street hours before the start of the West Indian Day Parade.

Gabey is in critical condition at Kings County Hospital after being shot in the head. Carey is First Deputy General Counsel at Empire State Development and was formerly an Assistant Counsel to Governor Andrew Cuomo.

In a statement, Gov. Cuomo said, “Carey is an outstanding public servant who joined our administration in 2011. He is a Harvard-educated lawyer who works for the State because he wants to give back to others and make a difference.” Cuomo asked that New Yorkers join him by keeping Gabey, his wife Trenelle and his family in their prayers.

Gabey was shot on Bedford Ave. and Sullivan Pl. in Crown Heights about 3:41 a.m. Monday while attempting to take cover from the gunfire with his brother, according to the Daily News report.

“This tragic shooting – this one by another seemingly random bullet – is the latest heartbreaking reminder that the crime of gun violence must stop. Enough young, innocent people have died, and it must stop now,” added Cuomo.

Gabey was on life support at Kings County Hospital where doctors were preparing to harvest his organs Monday afternoon, a high-ranking police source said.

At the West Indian Day Parade Association’s pre-parade breakfast, Cuomo praised Gabay’s commitment to public service.

“He could have gone to any Wall Street firm and made multiples of what he was making for the state,” Cuomo said.

In recent years, pre-dawn parade events surrounding the West Indian Day Parade have been marred by violence. Police attribute the shooting of Gabey to unrelated gang violence where he was caught in the crossfire. An related stabbing took place at Grand Army Plaza and Eastern Parkway.  And another man was shot in the stomach on Bedford Avenue.

Over 1,500 police officers had been assigned to patrol overnight pre-dawn J’Ouvert street parties. A number of guns were recovered as cops said gang members dropped their weapons when police approached one commotion at one street party.
