NYPL To Increase Staff, Hours, and Sunday Hours

As a result of the city’s unprecedented $43 million increase in operating funding to the city’s three library systems this fiscal year, The New York Public Library (which operates in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island) is increasing hours, Sunday service, and expert staff across its system. A release with all the details is here. Specifically in the Bronx, NYPL is:
  • Adding Sunday service to Parkchester and Grand Concourse starting Sept. 13.
  • Holding a public celebration of all Sunday service and hour increases at Grand Concourse this Sunday, Sept 13, at 1 pm
  • Conducting full, $20 million renovations / restorations of Bronx Carnegie libraries Melrose and Hunts Point (both of those branched were mentioned in the “Long Overdue” report report that the three library systems released as part of its Invest in Libraries campaign). Details and timelines for those renovations will come out in the next few months.
  • Going to the Melrose and Hunts Point communities (as we have in Westchester Square, which is getting a renovated library) to ask what residents want and need in their communities.
  • Increasing weekly public hours at branches Bronx-wide.
