Scandinavia House, ManhattanPortfolios Lecture Series Continues with Ken Smith

Join us in Manhattan on Monday, October 19, for the second lecture in a fascinating evening series that explores how ingenuity and deep insights are reimagining urban landscape design. New York-based landscape architect Ken Smith will talk about his boundary-breaking designs including the East River Waterfront Esplanade, the TFANA Arts Plaza in Brooklyn’s BAM Cultural District, and the Museum of Modern Art’s roof garden in Beyond the Metrics. The whole family can enjoy the Frida experience on a night out at the Children’s Adventure Garden! Capture a photo with larger-than-life skeletons that celebrate Día de los Muertos. Grab a Con Edison flashlight as you travel along the Whole Foods Market® Trick-or-Treat Trail after dark. Listen for critters of the night or sit in on a spooky ghost story. For those who dare, see the giant pumpkin displays illuminated in the darkness and journey along the meandering Mitsubishi Wild Wetland Trail. Get more information.

Watch Master Carver Ray Villafane transform giant pumpkins into a Día de los Muertos tableau. Enjoy daily Q&A sessions with his additional carvers. From October 24 through November 1, giant pumpkins supplied by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth will once again be on display in the Garden, some weighing more than a ton! Get more information.

October 31 & November 1Día de los Muertos Weekends

FRIDA KAHLO concludes with a celebration of the Mexican tradition known for bringing together family and friends to remember loved ones, Día de los Muertos. For two weekends in late October, join in the festivities with a procession of larger-than-life skeletons, butterflies, and La Catrina—the grande dame of this colorful holiday. Stroll the Conservatory Plaza with stilt dancers or check out the Giant Pumpkin Display. Artists in residence The Villalobos Brothers close out these weekend fiestas at the Garden with performances on October 31 & November 1. Get more information.

Classic and contemporary Mexican music meets the colorful traditions of ballet folklórico, featuring performances throughout the Garden by Mexico Beyond Mariachi, Jarana Beat, and Calpulli Danza Mexicana. Get more information, and be sure to check the lineup on the day of your visit.
