Misdemeanor Bail Review Begins Today

A process for reviewing bail decisions in New York City misdemeanor cases begins on Monday, as court administrators carry out Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman’s efforts to overhaul what he called a “broken system of bail.” Advocates of bail reform have been pushing alternatives to unnecessary incarceration because plaintiffs are unable to make money bail. The City Council recently created a revolving bail fund to assist qualified defendants.
