January 28th Is ‘Mr. G Day’ in the Bronx

NEW YORK – PIX11, Tribune Broadcasting’s New York flagship station, is joining Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. in proclaiming January 28^th ‘Mr. G Day’ in the Bronx. The ceremony will be held at P.S. 65 in the South Bronx. PS 65, The Mother Hale School, is located at  677 E 141st St, Bronx, NY 10454.

“Simply put, Mr. G is a New York institution. My first-ever television interview was with Mr. G when I was a student at P.S. 31 in the South Bronx, and he and I have been following each other’s careers closely ever since. I am proud to partner with PIX11 and P.S. 65 to honor my good friend Mr. G on behalf of the millions of New Yorkers whose lives he has touched during his broadcast career,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.

“The entire school community at PS 65 is excited to have not only our Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., with us, but also thrilled to have Mr. G, a fellow educator who is committed to inspiring young minds in the Bronx,” said PS 65 Principal Jasmine Gonzalez.

Irv Gikofsky, also known as Mr. G, has been delivering forecasts on New York television for over 30 years. New York’s most popular TV weatherman, Mr. G, began his career as a teacher at Albert Einstein Intermediate School (IS 131X) in The Bronx.  While a teacher, he created New York City school system’s first computerized weather program for use by children and their teachers. After teaching in public school for a decade, Mr. G was recruited right out of the classroom to become a TV weatherman.

Said Mr. G, “I’m proud to have spent 10 years teaching in the Bronx.  I gave 27 consecutive graduation speeches at PS 31…Chicago may have Da Bears, but New Yorkers have Da Bronx!”

“Mr. G is a New York icon with over 30 years of accurately forecasting the weather. Throughout his career, which began in the Bronx, Mr. G has consistently been involved in community building, specifically in New York City schools. This honor is richly deserved,” said Rich Graziano, President/GM, PIX11.

Mr. G joined PIX11 News in September 1993 and has won four Emmy Awards and an Edward R. Murrow Award. In 2008, Mike Wallace presented him with the Friar’s Club Life Time Achievement Award. In 2013 Mr. G added hosting duties of “It’s a G Thing” segments which air weekly in PIX11 News and focus on organizations in the local community.

An ardent supporter of education, Mr. G is very involved in working with students. To date, he has visited over 500 schools, especially lower income districts, where he speaks in classrooms (not just about weather, but motivationally as well).  Every year since its inception, he has participated in New York City’s “Principal For a Day” program, declaring that day “homework and test free” and always gets a standing ovation! Mr. G is a board member for the r baby foundation and works to improve pediatric care in emergency rooms in the Tri-state area.

When his is not forecasting or involved in charitable endeavors, Mr. G can often be seen running in Central Park, and has run in more than 30 New York City Marathons. An avid runner, he has run over 75,000 miles or three and a half times around the planet.

A previous ‘Mr. G Day’ was proclaimed on June 30, 1993 where he was honored for his motivational work with public school children. In 2014, Mr. G retired after 37 years with WCBS-FM.
