Batman vs Superman Still Rules The Weekend Box Office

It was a less than super weekend at the global box office for Warner Bros.’ ‘Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.’  Although the Zack Snyder-helmed film added $137.5 million to its already impressive haul and finished its second weekend with $682.8 million in the superhero box-office bank, revenues fell 69%. Despite the dismal reviews and revenue drop, ‘BvS’ has surpassed the ‘lifetime’ earnings of ‘Man of Steel.’

Holding onto second place is Disney’s animated family hit ‘Zootopia‘ which continued to roar across the world with an eye toward its next milestone, the $800 million mark.

The Hollywood Reporter (THR) cited big drops in key global markets. The box office haul fell about 67 per cent in in sixty-seven markets. ‘BvS’ has slowed dramatically in China, where it was beat by Zootopia this weekend. It has earned $85 million in China to date.

Warner Bros. says a key reason for Batman vs Superman‘s drop in the U.S. is the fact that the movie earned nearly $28 million in Thursday-night previews, which was folded into the opening-weekend gross.

THR noted that Deadpool celebrated its own milestone this weekend, becoming the top-grossing title in the X-Men universe of films with a global total through Sunday of $752 million for Fox, surpassing X-Men: Days of Future Past ($749 million).
