Council Member Andy King, Chair of the Subcommittee on Libraries, today celebrated the books of  beloved author Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, with the Unity Neighborhood Center children  at P.S 87, Bronx.

Wearing the signature top hat seen by Dr. Seuss’ main character in “Cat in the Hat,” Council Member King encouraged the youngsters who gathered in the school’s gym to read a book at every opportunity.

“The window to your future is reading. To succeed you must learn to read,” explained King, who had launched on March 1st a month-long reading initiative in libraries throughout the 12th Council District called “Reading Is Cool!”

In addition to Council Member King, PS 87 Principal Donna Anaman and volunteers read various Dr. Seuss books to more than 50 youngsters in attendance. The adults broke up into small groups with the youngsters and Council Member King read “Dr. Seuss Hooray for Diffendoofer Day” to the youngsters in his group.

“Dr. Seuss is considered to be one of the best American children writers. His timeless stories have captivated the hearts of children and adults world-wide and have been instrumental in helping youngsters learn to read,” said Council Member King.

As an American writer, poet, and cartoonist, Geisel (Mar 2, 1904 – Sep 24, 1991) was widely known for his children’s books written and illustrated as Dr. Seuss. He had used the pen name Dr. Theophrastus Seuss in college and later used Theo LeSieg and Rosetta Stone.
