Correction Officer Indicted for Rape of Rikers Island Inmate

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced the indictment of a city correction officer last week on a first-degree rape charge, among others, for engaging in sex acts with a Rikers Island inmate.

According to the indictment, defendant Jose Cosme, 36, of Brooklyn allegedly engaged in forced sexual intercourse with a female inmate late last Novemver in the Rose M. Singer Center of the jail complex.

“Correction Officers or any other staff in Rikers Island cannot use their position to abuse inmates. We will prosecute any jail employee who undermines the public’s trust and tarnishes the honest, hardworking members of the Department of Correction,” Clark said.

Cosme was arraigned last Friday before a judge and is due back in court on September 20. If convicted, he could face up to 50 years in prison.
