diwali_diaz_bharati“With over 3 million Hindus around our nation, we are seeing a growing population right here in the borough of The Bronx and it is an honor to recognize leading individuals as we celebrate Diwali,” said Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “Today, we light a few clay lamps to show respect for the culture but also to reflect on the past years and wish everyone good things in the New Year.”

Deepavali or Diwali is one of the largest and most important holiday of the year for Hindus in India, the Caribbean and around the world. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (or deepa) that Hindus light outside their homes and all around during the observance of the festival.
