“We Were Almost Too Late” – Letter to the Editor from HopeLines

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

We were almost too late…

Last year, Rose, a homeless young woman with Type-1 diabetes, passed out in the street from hyperglycemia, and was taken to ICU. After seven days, Rose was discharged. Her hospital social worker secured a bed for her at a women’s’ shelter, which was guaranteed until 7 p.m., and then she called HopeLines, a homeless prevention charity chartered for at-risk Bronxites.

HopeLines contacted Rose, discovered that she had low phone minutes, no money, and the shelter was 2 miles away.

HopeLines wired Rose money for transportation and phone minutes, which helped her get to the shelter in time. Grand total: $44.99.

For 10 months Rose thrived at the shelter. HopeLines helped her with clothing, toiletries, medical expenses, and a better phone plan. Grand total: $474.58. This fall Rose secured a small studio apartment, and in January is starting community college.

In 2012, HopeLines Homeless Relief Fund was organized by two teachers and a project manager. Its mission is keep small things small — pay a portion of ConEd to avoid shutoff, buy a monthly MetroCard — so that folks can think calmly through to their next step. We amended our mission to provide resources to house young, non-chronically homeless adults after Rose.

We spend very little to keep one person housed, but doing so saves New Yorkers $36,000 to $60,000 for social services.and correctional facilities.

During this season of year-end giving, we ask you to help us continue. Give generously to HopeLines Homeless Relief Fund, a 501(c)(3) charity. Our goal is $50,000 before the end of December.
