On Monday, President Obama commuted the sentences of Corey Jacobs, of the Bronx , along w/ 231 others, including 78 who were granted presidential pardons. Mr. Jacobs, a Mt. St. Michael Academy graduate was sentenced to life in federal prison on a non-violent drug charge, is the only New York City resident on the list released by the White House yesterday.

On the webpage, IamCoreyJacobs, visitors were asked to sign a petition asking President Obama to grant Mr. Jacobs clemency. Jacobs was serving a life sentence for a non-violent drug offense – his first ever felony conviction. His supporters noted that since his incarceration, Jacobs has written an anti-bullying children’s book series and a book on domestic violence.
Puerto Rican nationalist (and convicted terrorist in the minds of many) Oscar Lopez Rivera was not given a commutation. Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Assemblyman Jose Rivera were among prominent supporters who urged President Obama to commute his sentence.
