Statement from Assemblyman Marcos A. Crespo on President Trump’s Immigration and Border Control Plans

The up and down struggles to form a more perfect union have brought us to this low point in our nation’s history.

Today’s executive orders on building a wall at our nation’s southern border and restricting immigration from various parts of the world are feeding a xenophobic hysteria that undermines and discredits the great contributions immigrants make to our society.

Over 40% of undocumented immigration occurs through non-border crossings between Mexico and the United States. Targeting only entry from Mexico does nothing other than stigmatize and scapegoat Latinos and Latino communities across our nation.

Comprehensive immigration reform that relies on sound public policy not government actions coated with fear and prejudices is needed.

I along with many of my colleagues in the New York State Assembly will not stand idle as families are separated and destroyed or while innocent communities are targeted for blame.

This is the world’s largest economy with an annual GDP of over $17 Trillion dollars. The economic pulls and push triggers of a global economy with shifting labor forces alone require that our nation has a strong and workable immigration policy and laws in place.

Compassionate conservatism begins with rational and well thought out public policy. Both are missing from the actions taken today by President Trump.
