Chairman Crowley Statement on Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ Decision to Recuse Himself from Russia Investigations

(Washington, D.C.) – House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) released the following statement after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced plans to recuse himself from any ongoing or future investigations into the 2016 presidential campaign.

“Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ announcement that he’ll recuse himself from any future investigations into the presidential campaign falls short. He must resign. Having misled the American people, Congress, and his Senate colleagues, Attorney General Sessions has irrevocably broken the bond of trust Americans must have in the nation’s top lawyer. The Trump administration has ties to Russia, which must be thoroughly investigated by an independent commission.”

Chairman Joe Crowley has said repeatedly that Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ senior role in the Trump campaign calls into question his ability to act in an unbiased manner toward President Trump’s administration. Before it became clear that Attorney General Sessions misled the Senate Judiciary Committee, Chairman Crowley led more than 160 House Democrats demanding that Attorney General Sessions recuse himself from any investigations into Russia and Moscow’s influence over the Trump administration. There are now more than 100 House Democrats calling for the attorney general to resign.
