Profile America: Wonder Bread

Sunday, March 26 — Bread making goes back in history some 6,000 years, and for much of that time white bread had a higher status than coarser varieties.  With its popularity well established, the first commercial, pre-packaged white bread hit the American market in 1917.  Produced by the Taggert Baking Company of Indianapolis, this company has a distinguished position in America’s commercial baking history.  It introduced Wonder Bread in 1921, and after being absorbed by another firm, was the first to sell pre-sliced loaves nationwide. Wonder Bread is reputed to be the most widely sold brand in the world.  Giving us our daily breads, or cakes, cookies, doughnuts and more, are the 105,000 workers in America’s 2,800 commercial bakeries.
