Students from St. Thomas Aquinas Help Unload 1,000 Easter Hams Donated by Stop & Shop

STOP & SHOP DONATED 1,000 EASTER HAMS TO FIVE BRONX SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS WITH BOROUGH PRESIDENT RUBEN DIAZ JR AND STUDENTS FROM ST. THOMAS AQUINAS SCHOOL HELPING UNLOAD HAMS FROM 18-WHEELER TRUCK

[Bronx, NY]Stop & Shop Supermarket donated 1,000 Easter hams to five Bronx social service agencies that provide assistance to Bronxites in need. In recognition of the donation, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. joined several community service-minded 4th and 5th graders from neighboring St. Thomas Aquinas School to help unload an 18-wheeler packed with the hams in the parking lot of the supermarket at 961 E. 174th St. (Crotona Park East) in the Bronx, the morning of Thursday, April 13.

Discussing the need for emergency food and the impact of food insecurity in the Bronx, BP Diaz joined Stop & Shop’s Cindy Carrasquilla, Manager, Public and Community Relations and representatives from each of the recipient agencies: Love Gospel Assembly Church, Part of the Solution (POTS), New Season Christian Center, Thessalonia Baptist Church and Bronx Clergy Task Force.

Part of Stop & Shop’s continuing commitment to help local communities fight hunger, the donation seeks to provide some relief to those in need this Easter. According to Hunger Free America’s 2016 Hunger Survey Report, approximately 1.4 million New York City residents live in food insecure households in 2013-2015, with the Bronx being the hungriest borough. Other findings include:

· 31.46% – one in three – of Bronx residents lived in food insecure households in 2013-2015
· 36.98% – a little over one in three – of Bronx children lived in food insecure households in 2013-2015
· 22.48% – a little over one in five – of Bronx seniors in food insecure households in 2013-2015
· 56.41% of agencies responding to the survey reported not having enough food to meet current demand
