WNBA ALL-STAR AND FORMER NEW YORK LIBERTY CENTER KYM HAMPTON SPOKE AND PRESENTED TROPHIES TO STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AT NY INSTITUTE FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION’S SPORTS AWARDS CEREMONY

Kym Hampton, the WNBA legend and All-Star who played the center position for the New York Liberty, gave an inspirational address and helped present shiny new trophies to more than 60 student athletes with disabilities (ages 9-18) during the New York Institute for Special Education’s annual Sports Awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 24 at the Bronx school (999 Pelham Parkway North).

At the event, Hampton shared with the children inspiring stories of her experiences playing basketball professionally for 12 years, internationally and in the WNBA playing for the New York Liberty; encouraging them to follow their dreams. She then helped present the student athletes with trophies and awards for their accomplishments in the school’s various athletics programs.

The ceremony celebrated the determination, spirit and success in sports achieved by the visually-impaired and learning-disabled students, who despite their disabilities, have excelled in basketball, wrestling, track and field, goal ball and cheerleading. The school has an extensive athletic program and student teams compete with other schools for the disabled.

The New York Institute for Special Education, founded in 1831 as The New York Institute for the Education of the Blind, is one of the oldest and most respected schools in the nation that provides specialized services for children with disabilities. Located in the Bronx since 1924, NYISE provides quality programs for more than 300 students from New York City’s five boroughs, Westchester County and upstate New York, including more than 120 children from the Bronx, ages 3 to 5, who attend its preschool.
