Chairman Crowley Statement on Passage of Anti-Immigrant Bills in the House
(Washington, DC) – House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) issued the following statement after two anti-immigrant bills, including legislation that would strip New York City of critical federal funding because of its status as a sanctuary city, passed the U.S. House of Representatives:
“Neither of these bills would make Americans safer, improve our broken immigration system, or bolster relationships between immigrant communities and law enforcement officials. In fact, the Republicans’ attacks against sanctuary cities would put Americans at risk by withholding federal funding from cities like New York City to combat terrorism. These bills would also only further codify the dangerous and hateful rhetoric we’ve seen coming from President Trump’s administration. We must stand against policies that unfairly demonize our immigrant communities and instead focus on continuing the American tradition of welcoming those who come to our country to improve their lives and contribute to our communities.”
Kate’s Law would further criminalize repeated denials of entry into the U.S., making it harder for people coming here on employment visas, for family needs, or even seeking asylum to be treated fairly.
The No Sanctuary for Criminals Act would remove some federal funding for sanctuary cities in a misguided attempt to subject cities and localities to restrictive federal immigration policies and turn local law enforcement into a deportation force.
