Saturday, July 15 — It’s the height of the summer vacation season, and across the country, Americans are taking part in their favorite outdoor activities — from hiking and rock climbing to swimming and boating — or just enjoying the scenery. From Alaska to Florida, millions will visit the many national and local parks and recreation areas in every state in the union. To highlight this marvelous resource, this is National Recreation and Parks Month.

Nationwide, there are 305 million acres of protected land, and more than 80 million of those acres are national parks and recreation areas. State facilities account for another nearly 19 million acres. Helping conserve some of the remaining acreage are 700 private enterprise establishments operating nature parks, and employing 7,000 workers.
