NYC DOT, NYCHA, AND COUNCIL MEMBER KING UNVEIL NEW SIDEWALKS AT GUN HILL HOUSES IN WILLIAMSBRIDGE

With $500,000 allocated by Council Member Andy King, DOT repaired sidewalk and curbs outside major Bronx NYCHA development

Today, New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Bronx Borough Commissioner Nivardo Lopez, New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Borough Deputy Director Derek Powell, and Council Member Andy King officially unveiled newly repaired sidewalks at NYCHA’s Gun Hill Houses in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx.

Completed by DOT’s Sidewalk and Inspection Management (SIM) unit in late May, the work includes over 35,000 square feet of repaired sidewalks and over 2,000 linear feet of repaired curb.

“Sidewalks without defects provide a much safer passageway to all New Yorkers, whether they walk, use a wheelchair, or are pushing a stroller or shopping cart,” said Bronx Borough Commissioner Nivardo Lopez. “With Council Member King’s investment, we were able to reconstruct the equivalent of half a football field in sidewalks around the property of Gun Hill Houses, providing residents with smoother sidewalks and improved curbs.”

“Our NextGeneration NYCHA goal is to provide safe, clean and connected communities for everyone who calls NYCHA home,” said NYCHA General Manager Michael Kelly. “Today, the NYC Department of Transportation and Council Member Andy King have helped us get one step closer to that goal with these repaired sidewalks, improving the quality of life of Gun Hill Houses’ nearly 1,500 residents.”

“Gun Hill Houses is the gateway to the 12th District and these new sidewalks send a message of renewal and revitalization at this major hub in our community,” said Council Member Andy King. “I thank DOT for speedily completing this project and look forward to the upcoming major capital renovations I’ve funded within the Gun Hill Houses development that will complement this street-side refurbishment.”

So far this year, DOT has made sidewalk repairs to other major NYCHA developments, including the Castle Hill Houses in the Bronx and LaGuardia Houses in Manhattan.  NYC DOT oversees over 12,000 miles of sidewalks citywide, and replaces more than 2 million square feet of sidewalk a year.
