Chairman Crowley Congratulates Presidential Scholar in the Arts from Sunnyside, Queens

(Queens, NY) – House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) met Monday with Aaron Greenberg to celebrate the Sunnyside resident’s selection as a 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholar. Aaron is one of 161 American high school seniors who demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service, and contribution to school and community.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars were honored for their accomplishments in Washington, D.C., in June. As part of the festivities, the 20 Scholars in the Arts performed at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Aaron performed “Nigel’s Lament,” from the Broadway hit Something Rotten! and an original scene.

“I commend Aaron’s hard work, celebrate his talent, and look forward to seeing him excel in the future, as I know he will,” said Congressman Crowley. “To be selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar is a prestigious honor, and I join the U.S. Department of Education in commending Aaron’s artistic excellence. It is a distinct honor to see a student from Queens be celebrated so early on in his career.”

Aaron is a 2017 graduate of LaGuardia High School. While in high school, he appeared as Thenardier in Les Miserables, Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast and Herbie in Gypsy. This fall, he will begin a professional actor training program at Purchase College’s Conservatory of Theater Arts.

In 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established by executive order of President Lyndon B. Johnson to recognize and honor the nation’s top graduating high school seniors. Since then, more than 7,000 of the nation’s top-performing students have been honored with this prestigious award.
