Marjorie Velázquez Statement on Incident at Capri Motel Homeless Shelter

The Bronx, N.Y. – Yesterday, a registered sex offender was placed into the the homeless family shelter at the Capri Motel at 555 Hutchinson River Parkway. As a member of the Community Advisory Board (CAB) for this shelter, which was never advised of this incident, it is alarming to me that a sex offender could be put into a facility that houses families and children. Thanks to the quick work of Council Member James Vacca, the offender was removed by the Department of Homeless Services.

While the City has assured the Council Member that no other sex offenders would be placed in this facility, I believe we need to have better answers about how the process of placing this person into the facility happened in the first place. There needs to be clear safeguards for families and children in the facility, as well as the surrounding community, which seem to have been missed in this case.

If elected Council Member, I will not only make sure the City keeps it word on this facility, but I will get to the bottom of how this occurred in the first place and put in real safeguards to be sure it never happens again anywhere in the City.
