Chairman Crowley Statement on the 6th Anniversary of the End of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’
(Queens, NY) – House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley (D-NY) issued the following statement on the 6th anniversary of the end of the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy:
“Six years ago, ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ was dismantled, allowing gay and lesbian service members the opportunity to openly serve our country free from discrimination. As a result, our military and our nation are stronger and better reflective of the values we hold.
“While ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ was a significant step toward equality, there is still much more to be done to achieve a truly inclusive military. Our Armed Forces are once again being used as a tool to push forward a hateful agenda. Instead of pursing policies that make America less safe, President Trump should immediately reverse his politically motivated ban on transgender individuals serving in our Armed Forces. As we recognize this important day, we must recommit ourselves to the fight against the Trump administration’s discriminatory anti-transgender policy and work tirelessly to ensure that any qualified American who volunteers to serve can do so regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.”
