(Bronx, NY) – On Monday, October 16, Congressman Joe Crowley (D-NY), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, was joined by members of the Bronx-Queens Italian-American communities at a reception to celebrate Italian Heritage Month. Congressman Tom Suozzi (NY-3) delivered the keynote address at the annual event, which honors the contributions and culture of Italian-American across New York City and around the country. During the event, Crowley also recognized two community leaders for their outstanding public service: Bronx Community Board 11 Chair, Anthony Vitaliano, and District Leader and Community Advocate, Carol Scarano.

“Each year we take time to celebrate the long history of Italians in the United States,” said Rep. Crowley. “They were among our nation’s first new immigrants and their impact has been profound. I’m thrilled he could be this year’s special guest and join me in honoring individuals who have dedicated their lives serving their communities and helping others.”

“I thank Congressman Crowley for this honor and dedicate this recognition to my mother who sacrificed everything for her family and who taught me the value of hard work,” said Vitaliano. “I’m proud of my Italian heritage and culture and I’m thrilled to celebrate it with my community.”

“It is truly humbling to be recognized for doing the things that you love to do,” said Scarano. “As the daughter and granddaughter of Italian immigrants, I am proud of my heritage and of the values instilled in me of community and service to others. I thank Congressman Crowley for taking the opportunity to bring us together to honor our rich traditions.”
