Statement from State Senator Gustavo Rivera on #NatonalWalkoutDay

“As we watch the children teach the nation a lesson on the need for gun control during #NationalWalkoutDay today, I’d like to emphasize that policies that increases the amount of guns in schools do not help to protect our students. Last week, I stood on the floor of the Senate fighting against S.6798A, a bill that aimed to do just that. Instead, I called for measures that would truly help keep guns from falling into the hands of the wrong person. New York has some of the strongest gun control laws in the nation, but the federal government needs to follow suit. As Congress considers federal reform, the demands of our nation’s children are clear – banning assault weapons and modifiers, universal background checks before all gun sales, and disarmament of people who display warning signs of violent behavior through a court process. I am committed to continue being a voice for all the children who today call for their leaders to take real action and reform our gun control laws to truly keep them safe, whether in schools or at home.”
