Chairman Crowley, Attorney General Schneiderman Hold Tenants’ Rights Roundtable with Local Activists

(Queens, NY) – Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) was joined by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman today to discuss tenants’ rights with local renters and activists at Woodside on the Move in Woodside.

During the roundtable, participants asked Chairman Crowley and Attorney General Schneiderman about their efforts to combat the practices of predatory landlords and expand access to affordable housing in New York City.

“I was honored to join local renters, activists, and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman today at Woodside on the Move to discuss our shared commitment to tenants’ rights and affordable housing,” said Chairman Crowley. “New York City is facing a housing crisis that has forced the cost of living in Queens and the Bronx to unsustainable heights. I will continue fighting for policies in Congress that support renters and aspiring homeowners and do whatever I can to eliminate the abusive practices of predatory landlords across New York.”

“It is always a privilege to join residents, activists, and leaders like Chairman Crowley to discuss ways to address New York’s spiraling affordable housing crisis,” said Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman. “The city’s booming real estate market has left thousands of renters vulnerable to unscrupulous landlords. I am proud of the work our Tenant Harassment Prevention Task Force has done to hold bad landlords accountable – including putting notorious landlord Steve Croman behind bars – and to focus city and state resources where they’re needed most. I stand with Chairman Crowley and the working people of New York in the fight for a more fair, more just economy that works for everyone.”

During the roundtable, Chairman Crowley and Attorney General Schneiderman voiced their support for the activists leading grassroots efforts to empower tenants and secure safe, affordable housing for all New Yorkers.

Chairman Crowley also discussed his Rent Relief Act, federal legislation he authored to provide tax relief to renters across the country and address New York City’s affordable housing crisis.

Expanding access to affordable housing is one of Chairman Crowley’s top legislative priorities. In addition to the Rent Relief Act, Chairman Crowley’s Better Deal plan for Queens and the Bronx contains proposals designed to empower tenants and increase housing affordability in New York City.
