Chairman Crowley Presents Congressional Certificate to Senior Citizen

(Bronx, NY) – Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) met with a Bronx senior and veteran, Ciro Salemi, today to commemorate his lifetime of contributions to the community.

During the meeting at Northeast Bronx Senior Citizen Center, Chairman Crowley and former Councilman Jimmy Vacca presented Mr. Salemi with a Congressional Certificate in honor of his 100th birthday. Chairman Crowley also announced that an American flag will be flown over the U.S. Capitol in recognition of Mr. Salemi’s service.

“One of my greatest pleasures is meeting with members of our community who have contributed so much to our city,” said Chairman Crowley. “Mr. Salemi served our nation during World War II with honor and distinction. America has certainly changed a lot over the past century, and Mr. Salemi has had a front-row seat to some of our most historic moments. I deeply appreciate him taking the time to meet with me and share his story.”

Ciro Salemi was born on February 25, 1918 and served as a cook in the Army during World War II. Following the War, he corrugated boxes for a living and moved into the Northeast Senior Center in the Bronx in 1983.

The Congressional Medal of Merit was established in 1942 to honor citizens who served the nation during World War II. Today, the Medal is issued more broadly to honor citizens for their contributions, leadership, and achievements.
