BIG JOHN’S MOVING, INC. PURCHASES NEW VAN
FOR KINGSBRIDGE HEIGHTS COMMUNITY CENTER

Bronx, NY – Thanks to the generous donation of Big John’s Moving Inc., Kingsbridge Heights Community Center (KHCC) will receive a new van this Spring. The moving company has agreed to cover the full cost of a new 15 seat vehicle for KHCC. The van will be used to transport the agency’s program participants, including students in the Special Needs program.
After agency vans broke down in 2017, KHCC sought donations for new multi-passenger vehicles. The community rallied to raise funds to replace one van in September 2017. Now, the agency celebrates accomplishing their goal of replacing their second aging van with the help of Big John’s Moving Inc. and New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera.
“When Senator Rivera learned that our van fleet transporting special needs students needed help, he suggested  talking to a business who might have a used van to donate,” said KHCC’s Executive Director Margaret Della. “Senator Rivera has championed our Special Needs program’s interests, even advocating for KHCC to receive a competitive Medicaid rate as our reimbursement rate was third lowest in the City and one of the lowest in the State.”
“I am extremely proud of the work the Kingsbridge Heights Community Center does for children and families in my district and across the Bronx,” said Senator Rivera. “This is why I am thrilled to have played a small part in securing a new van for them, which they desperately needed to continue offering their services. We were extremely fortunate to have met John and Maria from Big John’s Moving, two extraordinarily generous and caring people, who want to help in any way they can.”
John Healy, the owner of Big John’s Moving, Inc. recognized KHCC’s urgent need for a reliable van and decided to step in and help KHCC secure a passenger van to transport the agency’s kids.
The passenger van will be used to pick up and drop off after school program participants, including students with special needs. KHCC’s Special Needs program provides 7-day services to support young people with autism and down-syndrome. The van will also be used by the agency’s College Directions Program to visit colleges in the tri-state area. The program, which supports high school Juniors and Seniors preparing for college, has a 100 percent college acceptance rate and 75 percent of the participants are the first in their family to attend college.
“I look forward to hearing about the college tours and enriching trips that the kids will now be able to take without worrying about their safety,” Senator Rivera added.
