STATE SENATOR JEFFREY D. KLEIN AND THE NEW YORK STATE SENATE HONOR BRONX MUSIC TEACHER MELISSA SALGUERO, WINNER OF THE 2018 GRAMMY MUSIC EDUCATOR AWARD

Deputy Minority Leader State Senator Jeff Klein hosts 34th District P.S. 48 students at the Capital, for the presentation of a Senate Resolution in recognition of their teacher, Melissa Salguero, before the State Senate.

Albany, New York—Deputy Minority Leader Senator Jeff Klein, joined by Members of the New York State Senate, today honored Bronx P.S. 48 music teacher Melissa Salguero for receiving the 2018 GRAMMY Music Educator Award by the Recording Academy and Grammy Foundation. Senator Klein provided transportation and hosted Ms. Salguero and her students at the State Capital, where he presented a New York State Senate Resolution in recognition of Ms. Salguero’s extraordinary achievements and contribution to music education.

“I’m so pleased to have Ms. Salguero and the P.S. 48 music class here in our state’s capital, and to give these students this truly special opportunity to witness the entire New York State Senate honor and celebrate their teacher’s extraordinary career and achievement winning the 2018 GRAMMY,” said Senator Jeff Klein. “Melissa Salguero is a mentor to her students and a role model in the teaching profession and in the community, and we thank her for her dedicated service and for making a difference in the lives of our Bronx children.”

“It is such an honor to be recognized by Senator Klein for my contributions to the field of music education,” said P.S. 48 teacher Melissa Salguero. “His support for the arts and education have helped so many children in the Bronx have access to opportunities and experiences that tight budgets don’t always allow for. I was elated when Senator Klein invited my chorus students to visit him Albany. My students and I will remember this trip for the rest of our lives.”

Melissa Salguero began her distinguished career at P.S. 48 Joseph R. Drake Elementary School in the South Bronx in 2010, and in the past eight years, has raised over $160,000 to build the music program from the ground up. In 2013, she was honored as the Lincoln Center Arts Teacher of the Year, and has been featured on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show, representing the school.

The GRAMMY Music Educator Award was established by the GRAMMY Foundation to recognize current educators, teaching kindergarten through college, in both public and private schools, who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education, and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in schools. The GRAMMY recipient is selected from 10 finalists and recognized for their remarkable impact on students’ lives.

The South Bronx’s P.S. 48 Joseph R. Drake Elementary School is located in Hunts Point in the 34th District, represented by Senator Jeff Klein. The school, named for the 19th century New York City poet who wrote lyrics about the Bronx, is 101 years old with a rich history of educating community children from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Currently, Latino students comprise the majority enrollment, followed by African American and Asian students.
