Chairman Crowley Leads Efforts to Strengthen Coastal Protections in the East Bronx
(Washington, D.C.) — Today, Congressman Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, announced new efforts to protect shoreline communities in the eastern Bronx from future storms and flooding.
Communities throughout the East Bronx, including Edgewater, Throgs Neck, Pelham Bay, Locust Point, and City Island, were devastated by Superstorm Sandy in 2012, which left tens of thousands of residents without power and created millions of dollars’ worth of damages. In a letter sent this week, Chairman Crowley urged the Army Corps of Engineers to invest in shoreline communities along the East Bronx to ensure they are more resilient to future storms and flooding.
Increased funding for infrastructure projects in the Bronx is a major aspect of Chairman Crowley’s Better Deal for Queens and the Bronx, a comprehensive plan put forward by Chairman Crowley to improve the lives of families and working men and women in New York’s 14th Congressional District.
“Given the positive work that the Army Corps has done on the North Atlantic coast to promote resiliency, I would like to encourage you to explore other projects along the eastern shore of the Bronx that will improve resiliency and include requests for funding such efforts in your submissions to Congress,” wrote Chairman Crowley. “I believe those communities of the Bronx that were most affected by the storm would strongly benefit from the understanding of future risk based on these studies and recommendations on how to prepare for and mitigate these risks.”
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Chairman Crowley helped secure billions of dollars in federal funding to aid recovery efforts across the tristate area. Chairman Crowley is a strong proponent of increased funding for disaster relief programs and worked with his Congressional colleagues to support families impacted by last year’s catastrophic Hurricane season. Chairman Crowley will continue to lead these efforts as the 2018 Hurricane season comes into full swing.
