Engel Signs Discharge Petition to Force Vote to Restore Vital Net Neutrality Protections
Today Congressman Eliot Engel signed a discharge petition to force a vote to restore net neutrality protections, after House Republican leadership refused for six months to even debate restoring the net neutrality rules that the Trump Administration dismantled in December.
“Yesterday the Senate took a big step toward protecting net neutrality. Now the House must do the same,” Engel said. “For months, House Democrats have urged the Republican leadership to take up our net neutrality protection bill. We have spoken out loudly about the need to maintain a free and open internet, that protects consumers, preserves our democracy, and enables small businesses to grow. Yet in spite of our efforts, our calls to save the internet have fallen on deaf ears. Now, Democrats are left with no choice but to try and force Republicans to do the right thing for the American people.”
The Trump Administration voted to dismantle net neutrality back in December, and Democrats are fighting back with a bold, ambitious and detailed plan to:
· Safeguard the open Internet through strong net neutrality protections;
· Ensure nationwide, competitive broadband options for consumers and small businesses; and
· Expand our Better Deal for Universal High-Speed Internet to bring broadband to every neighborhood and school.
“Restoring net neutrality protections simply cannot wait,” Engel said. “I was proud to sign this discharge petition and will continue to fight for my constituents to ensure they have access to a free and open internet.”
