Maters of Faith: A Few Good Men!

Proverbs 2:1-5 (NKJV)
“My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.”

It doesn’t take much to be a good man. Just look at the scripture I referenced for this article. King Solomon is talking to his son(s) about the realities of life. Essentially, Solomon is saying that it does not matter what goes on around you, what matters is what’s going on in you.

Solomon has three prominent “if” statements in this pericope; if you receive my words; if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding; if you seek it like a precious metal.

He could have been talking to us. The Living Bible has a more concise interpretation of those verses:
“Every young man who listens to me and obeys my instructions will be given wisdom and good sense. Yes, if you want better insight and discernment, and are searching for them as you would for lost money or hidden treasure, then wisdom will be given you and knowledge of God himself; you will soon learn the importance of reverence for the Lord and of trusting him.”

To receive, to call, and to seek are all within our reach. We don’t need a special anointing. We don’t have to be born in an affluent socio-economic class. We don’t have to have a specific level of education. He said that He would give wisdom, knowledge and good sense to every young man (and woman) who has a heart for the Lord, a sincere desire to hear His voice, and a willingness to obey and to trust that He will do what He promises to do. He was trying to raise a few good men.

For the many men who have never had the honor and privilege of having a biological father in their home, why not consider adopting the wisdom of Solomon as your spiritual Dad? The advice he gave to his own sons is just as good for you as it was for them. It is my sincere prayer that we all take the instructive words of Solomon to heart and call out for insight and raise our voices for understanding; that we would seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures so that we can be counted in the number of a few good men.

To the biological as well as those who are father’s by relationship, Happy Father’s Day!

Be Blessed +++
