Bronx Democratic County Dinner 2018

By Robert Press

The Bronx Democratic County Dinner began with speeches by state, city, and Bronx elected officials. The theme of several speeches focused on how the city and state would get through tough new federal regulations and policies.

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul led off the night’s anti-President Donald Trump theme by sniping that he should act like an American, not a Russian. That was carried over by NYC Public Advocate (and New York Attorney General candidate) Letitia James. She said that she would continue the practice of the AG’s office suing the federal government to protect the rights of labor, women, and those who are the most vulnerable.

Mayor Bill de Blasio continued the tirade against the president and took time out to congratulate Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. on the vast improvements of the Bronx during his tenure.

After the speeches State Senator Jamaal Bailey called up the four honorees of the dinner who were, Ms. Rella Fogliano (CEO of the MacQuesten Companies, Dr. Mario J. Garcia (Chief of Cardiology, Montefiore-Einstein College of Medicine), Ms. Rosa Garcia (owner Mott Haven Bar & Grill), and Mr. Joseph Geiger (Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Metro NYC District Council of Carpenters).

The high point of the dinner came as ex-assemblywoman and former Bronx Deputy Borough President Aurelia Greene was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

This year a portrait of the former lawmaker was commissioned and presented to her at this year’s dinner. It was the first time Mrs. Greene was at a loss for words as she thanked everyone for the beautiful portrait.
