IDG On Uber Ruling: We cannot rely on the courts. Cities, States Must Act. Drivers Must Organize.

Statement from the Independent Drivers Guild on today’s ruling by U.S. Federal Appeals Court in CA Uber case:

“Uber has the venture capital to keep these court cases going indefinitely and in the meantime hundreds of thousands of drivers and their families across the U.S. are suffering with no protections, no benefits. It’s time for cities and states across the country to stop simply looking at Uber as a piggy bank for taxes, but protecting drivers with the kinds of pay rules and benefits we are winning here in New York. We cannot rely on the courts to act. Drivers must continue to come together to create change.” — Jim Conigliaro Jr., Founder of the Independent Drivers Guild
The Independent Drivers Guild is an affiliate of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and represents and advocates for more than 65,000 app-based drivers in New York City. We are Uber, Lyft, Juno, and Via drivers united for a fair for-hire vehicle industry.  The IDG recently won the nation’s firstlivable wage law for app-based drivers as well as vision and telemedicine benefits through the NYS Black Car Fund. In 2017, the IDG fought for and won a tipping option in the Uber app.
