Southern Boulevard below Fordham Road was closed for two hours as firefighters fought a five alarm fire at 2363 Southern Boulevard near East 187th Street. The fire completely destroyed a first floor apartment, and sent two people in the apartment above the fire to the hospital with smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire was declared unknown, and an investigation will be done to determine the exact cause of the blaze.

Tower ladders blocked the entire street for hours for rooftop access, as two buses that run on Southern Boulevard were stuck between the fire and responding fire units. Those buses were turned into temporary shelters for residents who were forced out of the six story building.
