Sources have confirmed to NY Sports Day that the Mets have signed lefthander Hector Santiago to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

The 31 year-old pitched with the White Sox last season and went 6-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 49 games, including seven starts. In relief he had a 4.41 ERA with a 1.58 WHIP in 105 innings.

This is just the latest of depth moves by general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, who has been very aggressive this off-season. By signing Santiago, the Mets have insurance for the rotation, especially if they move a pitcher like Seth Lugo, who has been rumored with the Houston Astros.

And because Newark native can start and pitch in out of the bullpen, he brings some versatility to the staff.

Besides Chicago, Santiago also pitched for the Los Angeles Angels and Minnesota Twins. Before last season, he was mainly used as a starter.
