Jim Mahoney

Jim Mahoney is a household name in the Northport community where he has distinguished himself as an outstanding veterans advocate, community leader and family man. Drafted in the 1950s into the U.S. Army, Mr. Mahoney served our country for two years while stationed in various cities throughout the U.S. and in Frankfurt, Germany.

He then returned to Northport where for nearly four decades he has immersed himself in community outreach efforts designed to raise funds for veterans and educate children.

A life member of the American Legion Post #694, Mr. Mahoney has organized numerous Memorial Day and Pearl Harbor Day presentations and coordinated blood drives and countless American Legion fundraisers. Most recently he has served as a liaison between town officials and the community to help establish a Veterans Community Center.

For over 30 years, Mr. Mahoney has been a member of the Northport Volunteer Fire Department and Chairman of the Fire Prevention Education Committee. He has spearheaded numerous Fire Prevention Education programs and has enlightened over 35,000 school children to the hazards of fire and the importance of fire safety.

As Chair of the Suffolk County Firefighters Burn Center annual fundraiser, he and his wife, Sophie, have raised over $150,000. In 2002, he received the National Volunteer Fire Council’s Firefighter of the Year Award. He is a strong, yet compassionate voice for children, veterans and seniors, who has earned the respect of the local townspeople as well as national leaders.
