Drama Will Continue For “GGG” At The Garden

“Big Drama” was on stage Wednesday at Madison Square Garden and Gennadiy Golovkin does not want more drama with three-division  champion Canelo Alvarez. He will be seeking his second middleweight title Saturday night at the Garden under his new contract with the DAZN Streaming Network.

The drama will be “GGG” regaining the middleweight title which is one part of the division that used to be owned by Alvarez who moved up in weight and could move down again.

Because Canelo Alvarez got the investment of $365 million from DAZN, he seems to get what he wants and who is to argue the point.

But Golovkin, (39-1-1, 35 KO’s) the popular fighter from Kazakhstan, and with the only loss that was controversial to  Alvarez for the WBC middleweight title, has moved on. He wants boxing fans and those in the media to bypass him fighting Canelo again a third time.

Yes. a trilogy is what boxing fans want and deserved between the two. And perhaps it is what they deserved after two fights that had more than enough drama with controversy and the first one ending in a draw.

And that first fight could have gone either way. But the way to go now is to move on, and Golovkin, as popular as he is, will get another chance for redemption Saturday night.

Sergiy Derevyanchenko, (13-1, 10 KO’s” from the Ukraine, residing in Brooklyn, is determined as all fighters are. He knows something about a championship fight in New York and lost a bid at the vacant IBF middleweight title to Daniel Jacobs last October in the Hulu Theater at the Garden.

However, it has been Canelo Alvarez causing all the drama. He has this obsession now to seek another title and will try and dethrone light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev in Las Vegas next month.

For now,  Gennadiy Golovkin had no choice but to take another route. Alvarez made other decisions and seems to be in command while his adversary may be avoiding him, even though they are under the same DAZN banner and Matchroom Boxing the promoters who signed Alvarez to that 10-fight $365 million deal.

The reported richest contract at the time in sports, at least for a fighter, has lived up to the investment and is attempting to be a four division champion.

But Golovkin made it known Wednesday that it is time for the media to move on as he has from the Canelo Alvarez saga.  Though in boxing, and with a third fight that can sell again, it could be inevitable.

“I think that was his only option,” he said about Canelo taking on Kovalev. “Of all the offers, he had, the only option was for him to take the fight with Kovalev. I don’t know if he’s going to win, but I know Kovalev is gaining more from that fight than Canelo.”

So take this IBF title fight as it is. Also realize that DAZN has a good investment in Canelo Alvarez and the fighter known as “Triple G” is not looking ahead and also a good investment.

It makes for good drama as it is being billed.

“Don’t waste your breath with the question, who will you fight next?” said Ed Hearn the head honcho of Matchroom Boxing USA. “The answer is absolutely anyone. There’s  no one in the sport of boxing that Gennadiy Golovkin won’t fight. But the only thing that matters right now is Saturday night and a chance for this young man to make history.”

And with DAZN, reportedly exceeding expectations with their subscription base of fans worldwide, Golovkin and his popularity  could take his talents to Japan and take on Ryota Murata an Olympic champion and also a part of this mix that would cause more drama.

It can also lead to Golovkin making more history.

Considering that DAZN and Matchroom have the resources, and two of the top pound-for-pound fighters with Alavarez and Golovkin, don’t rule it out about a third fight.

That investment is to go beyond the results of Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.
