Van Nest Veteran’s Day Remembrance

In the triangle at White Plains Road and Van Nest Avenue is the Van Nest Memorial, with its new flagpole the Van Nest community received. Rich Vitacco of the East Bronx Historical Society gave a history of the Van Nest Memorial, which sits just over the Amtrak bridge from the sprawling community of Parkchester.

This years honoree was Earl Menard retired serviceman and former commander of the Bryant American Legion Post #19. Van Nest Neighborhood Alliance President Bernadette Ferrara, Assemblywoman Nathalia Fernandez, and Councilman Mark Gjonaj spoke during the ceremony. Councilman Ritchie Torres who secured funding for the new flagpole did not attend the Veteran’s Day event .
