This was no ordinary Christmas tree lighting because the giant tree used for years at the corner of Boston Road and Allerton Avenue could not be used this tear. Due to the inclement weather a smaller tree could not be put in place until right before the time of the lighting. Allerton International Merchants Head Gene DeFrancis had some help in setting up the tree. the PS 89 Panther Cheerleaders practiced at the Sanz of Allerton Avenue where there was to be a warm up after the tree lighting.

Santa came by train stopping at White Castle to change and down some Belly Bombers. The PS 89 Panther Cheerleaders came over to sing some holiday songs as the last piece of trim was placed on the Allerton Avenue Christmas tree. All was ready, the Cheerleaders singing, Santa handing out goodies, and then the tree was lit.
