COUNCIL MEMBER FERNANDO CABRERA CALLS FOR DOE CURRICULUM TO TEACH KIDS TO STAY AWAY FROM GUNS, IMPLEMENT CITY-WIDE

Bronx, NY- In the aftermath of an 8-year-old child accidentally self-inflicting a gunshot wound to his head, Council Member Cabrera today called for the New York City Department of Education to develop and implement city-wide a curriculum that teaches children to stay away from guns.

“A child in my community was seriously injured last week because he didn’t know the dangers of handling a gun that he found in his home. This tragedy, which has left a child in the hospital and a family and community traumatized, could have been avoided.  While the gun should have been unloaded and inaccessible to the child, if he had understood the dangers of touching the firearm, this might not have happened.  I’m calling on the Department of Education to add age-appropriate curriculum to its health and safety programs that teaches kids not to touch a gun, the dangers of firearms, and implement it in every school district.  If they find a gun in their home, in someone else’s home or outside, they must know to never touch it,” Cabrera.  “This must never happen again to any child or family.”

Council Member Cabrera is available for interviews.
